Little Light got her pseudonym from her real name, the irish form of helen [greek] and evelyn [germanic] which means light.
she likes to think of herself as a stout little phoenix. she is an artist at heart but also writes because she believes that is how she can help shape history.
she claims to have the gift of seeing and prides herself in her ideas. if she were a book character, she would be scout finch.
when once you have tasted flight, you will forever walk the earth with your
eyes turned upward, for there you have been, and there you will always long to return. - leonardo da vinci (1452-1519)
we are not born all at once, but by bits; the body first, and the spirit later. our mothers are racked with the pains of our physical birth; we ourselves suffer the longer pains of our spiritual growth. - mary antin
i have often dreamed, of a far off place
where a hero's welcome, would be waiting for me
where the crowds will cheer, when they see my face
and a voice keeps saying, this is where i'm meant to be
i'll be there someday, i can go the distance
i will find my way, if i can be strong
i know evry mile, will be worth my while
when i go the distance, i'll be right where i belong
down an unknown road, to embrace my fate
though that road may wander it will lead me to you
and a thousand years, would be worth the wait
it might take a lifetime but somehow i'll see it through
i won't look back, i can go the distance
and i'll stay on track, no, i won't accept defeat
it's an uphill slope, but i won't lose hope
till i go the distance, and my journey is complete
but to look beyond the glory is the hardest part
for a hero's strength is measured by his heart
like a shooting star, i will go the distance
i will search the world, i will face its harms
i don't care how far, i can go the distance
till i find my hero's welcome, waiting in your arms
i will search the world, i will face its harms
till i find my hero's welcome, waiting in your arms

building a rock foundation
when i was eight, the tallest building in my hometown was built. i can't remember how tall it was; surely it was nothing like the ones on ayala avenue or those in ortigas. but in our place, it was already something that excited us. it was to become a private hospital, the most modern yet in our developing city.
it was near my school, so i passed by it every morning on my way to class and every afternoon whenever i go home. i saw the structure from the time the foundation was dug until the topmost floor was added. it was barely one grading period when construction was over and when it was, it was tilting a bit to one side.
while everyone was talking about the opening of the new hospital, my opinionated father lambasted about its poor construction at home. he said its foundation was shallow and that its framework was not secure because the construction was unreasonably hurried. he said it would only pose danger to the lives of its patients rather than give them hope.
i don't remember what the city government did about the issue, but i learned one important thing from it. i learned that the taller the building gets, the deeper and stronger its foundation should be. in fact, the tallest and biggest skyscrapers in the world have foundations that penetrate the earth's bedrock. from what little i know about engineering, the foundation receives the weight of the building--the structure underground balances the structure that goes up into the sky.
but the foundation isn't enough. care must also be executed in putting up a building's framework. taipei 101, currently the world's tallest building at 1,670 ft, was built to endure earthquakes above seven on the richter scale.* builders say steel is the backbone of most modern buildings. in any case, speeding up construction or using substandard materials should not be an option. there must be a blueprint of and a picture in mind of what the structure would be like before construction even begins. remember that news of a five-year old building that collapsed in divisoria two years ago?
this works the same way for people. the taller one needs to be, the deeper one's foundation should be. otherwise, we would be like that building that collapsed so early in its life. anyone can grow tall without a good foundation, but i think that person would be shaky and fickle, the same way a building without a proper foundation is squeaky before it eventually collapses. what our foundation is may differ depending on how we value the things around us, but i have definitely been building mine strong and deep.

little light June 11, 2006 04:10 PM PDT ate jacq: it could also be taken to represent strength of character. =)
miss you!
corsarius: thank you. may work ka na pala? congrats. =)
Corsarius June 11, 2006 01:51 AM PDT belated happy birthday po :) pasensya na't sobrang late -- busy na kasi sa work. ingat!
ate jacq June 10, 2006 03:56 PM PDT forgot to add i miss you li'l sis.. ate's way in over her head in work..*big hugs*
ate jacq June 10, 2006 03:54 PM PDT ditto adam.. this post also applies to relationships..
and ge also has a point.. experiences do make us stronger.. that is if, and only if, they know how to get the gems from their experiences.. some people never learn.. they just go around in circles..
and nice point baby girl.. yeah, you have to know first where you're going.. altho for some people it's their experiences that led them to knowing where they wanna go, and sometimes it's better that way.
little light June 5, 2006 02:50 PM PDT thank you. =)
yayam June 4, 2006 09:42 AM PDT great post.:) take care aileen.:)
little light June 3, 2006 08:33 PM PDT it helps, but it's not everything. i wasn't referring to experiences here; rather i wanted to point out the importance of, among other things, knowing where you're going.
but like what you said, experiences help. i don't think you're weak, but i hope you succeed in your feat anyway. =)
ge June 3, 2006 08:25 PM PDT experiences make one's foundation stronger. hmm, or so i believe.
i am a weak person, i admit. hay. but i'm trying to establish myself.
little light June 3, 2006 07:09 PM PDT adam: i hadn't thought of that angle, but yes, this post can apply to relationships. thanks for your insight as well. =)
chrysalis: you're welcome. i hope it helped. =)
chrysalis June 1, 2006 09:59 PM PDT Some of us feel we've become top-heavy and are about to collapse, if we haven't already. The time for stability is before one reaches that point. Otherwise ... well, you become like me ...
Insightful entry, little light.
Adam Mordo June 1, 2006 03:51 PM PDT I guess this is true for a lot of things. Relationships come to mind as weel. Too many people try too hard "to reach new heights" together that they completely forget to find any depth in their relationship. They find themselves crumbling in less than a year. Thanks for the insights. have a good day.
